  Wielki przebój
kasowy wyprodukowany przez Spielberga.Pewnego dnia Steve i Diana wraz z dwójką dzieci wprowadzają się do
wymarzonego domu. Jednak już po kilku dniach od przeprowadzki zaczynają dziać się dziwne rzeczy. W kuchni
bez niczyjej pomocy przesuwają się krzesła, drzewo w czasie burzy próbuje zjeść chłopca, a
mała dziewczynka zostaje wciągnięta przez telewizor. Przerażeni rodzice wzywają parapsychologów,
którzy stwierdzają, że dom nawiedzany jest przez ducha. Z czasem okazuje się że został on
wybudowany w samym centrum starego, indiańskiego cmentarzyska...
 
  Powstały również dwie
kolejne części, lecz cała seria cieszy się złą sławą filmu przeklętego.Po realizacji
zmarło kilku aktorów, w tym odtwórczyni roli dziewczynki 13 letnia Heather O'Rourke.

O'Rourke, która grała w filmie Carol-Anne i Dominique Dunne, grająca nastoletnią córkę,
spoczywają na tym samym cmentarzu: Westwood Memorial Park w Los Angeles. Dunne zostałą uduszona przez
swojego chłopaka w 1982, roku wydania filmu. Sześć lat potem umarła O'Rourke.
